Variegated Ivy and Strawberry begonia (Saxifraga sarmentosa -S. stolonifera)

Caladium ‘Rosebud’ – part shade, moist, but well-drained soil. More info. Caladiums are summer bulbs grown as annuals, you can lift the bulbs before frost and save them over winter, much like dahlias or gladiolas. They have many foliage variations and named varieties.

This was one of my all time best containers for shade- it was beautiful all season and had just the right amount of color to shine out in a shady area

For a large container, all these plants are strong growers. I love the strong contrasts of gold and purple in this one, it is surprisingly subtle given the colors chosen

Likes cooler temperature and bright light. Grows from tender bulb.

Dahlia
Use a light to medium yellow from ‘Figaro Mix’. Dahlias come in all sizes, this is a dwarf landscape type. The tender tuber can be lifted before frost to save for following season

Helichrysum petiolare
Grows best in full sun with well-drained soil; part sun and normal moisture is fine for it. The root ball will get pretty large, so make sure container has room. Zone 9 to 10 – tender in the North.

White Variegated Ivy

The top picture is a container combination of tender tints with strong forms. The plant choices are unusual and give common colors a memorable arrangement. The bottom photo combines several colors of the same plant, Calibrachoa hybrids. This is effective when there are strong colors available, petunias will always be the prime example of this type of recipe. Pick your favorites to spill out of hanging baskets.
